Marugame Castle, also known as Kameyama Castle, is a flatland castle built on Mt. Kameyama, which is approximately 66 meters above sea level. It consists of the main keep, second keep, third keep, outer bailey, and lower bailey, and the historical site covers 204,756 square meters within the inner moat, out of a total area of approximately 540 meters east-west and 460 meters north-south. As its name suggests, Marugame Castle is famous throughout Japan as a castle with magnificent stone walls, often described as a “stone castle.” The keep, viewed from the main gate, is full of dignity, and the keep at dusk exudes a gentle warmth that soothes the soul. Even after 400 years, it has not faded at all, and its unique style and beauty in harmony with nature remain clearly visible to the present day. It has also been selected as one of the “100 Famous Castles of Japan” by the Japan Castle Association and is a popular place for citizens to relax, enjoy cherry blossom viewing, and take walks.
