Kintaikyo Bridge is a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty and one of Japan’s most iconic wooden bridges. First built in 1673, the bridge has been rebuilt several times due to floods and other factors, each time using traditional techniques. The bridge is approximately 193 meters long and 5 meters wide. It was constructed using the timber-frame technique, using makigane (rolled oak) and kasugai (seashell) wood. The arched bridge’s structure is intricate and ingenious, and is said to be flawless even from the perspective of modern bridge engineering. We can enjoy the colorful scenery of the four seasons: cherry blossoms in spring, night views of cormorant fishing and fireworks in summer, autumn foliage in the natural forest of Shiroyama, and a blanket of snow in winter.
The dish being eaten in the second half of the video is Kawara Soba.
Kawara Soba is a local dish that originated in Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is a noodle dish made by placing green tea soba noodles on a heated roof tile, topping it with ingredients such as beef and shredded egg, and dipping it in hot soup. It was inspired by stories of soldiers in the Meiji period grilling meat and other dishes on roof tiles.
